âDid you record any more of your memoirs today?â Rhiannon asks her landlady later, after theyâve had dinner and are sitting sipping herbal tea in the living room.
A solitary tear runs down Leilaâs cheek. âI didâ¦â
Rhiannon jumps up from the armchair and gives her a hug. âIâm sorry, I hope I didnât make you sad.â
âYou didnât. Iâm feeling emotional because earlier I narrated a poignant part of my story.â
Slowly, stopping every now and then to collect her thoughts, Leila tells Rhiannon about the battle for the university, the execution of her comrades, her own arrest and torture by the fascists. âMy sweetheart rescued me, along with his fellow partisans. We got married afterwards.â
Rhiannonâs heart weeps for her. âI thought you were singleâ¦â
âYes. Well, the marriage documents were never filed.â Leila breathes in a deep breath and lets it out again. âPaolo was killed before that could happen.â
âOh, no,â Rhiannon canât help wailing. âHow tragic. Iâm so sorryâ¦â
âI still miss him,â Leila sniffs back another tear. âIf thereâs an afterlife, I hope weâll find each other again.â
âYou must have loved him very much.â
âI did. And I still do.â Her voice rasps. âWe were soulmates then and will always be, even though weâve been cruelly separated by his death.â
Rhiannon wants to ask Leila how Paolo died, but she doesnât want to upset her further. âIâve never been in love,â she says by way of distraction.
âYouâre very young. Thereâs time.â
âI doubt it will ever happen.â Rhiannon sighs. âThereâs something blocking me.â
âOh, my dear. Would you like to talk about it?â
âI had a boyfriend once. But when we tried to be intimateâ¦â Heat creeps up Rhiannonâs neck and flames her cheeks. âIt wasnât possible. My body wouldnât let him in.â
Itâs Leilaâs turn to pull Rhiannon in for a hug. âYou shouldnât worry too much about that. When you meet the right person, all will be well.â
âIâm not sure,â Rhiannon says. The memory of those excruciating times when Owen and she tried to make love will always be with her. They gave up trying in the end and he dropped her for another girl. âI think Iâm better off on my own.â
âAh, you say that now, but youâll meet someone one day whoâll change your mind.â A soft smile brushes Leilaâs mouth. âLetâs have a glass of Limoncello,â she suggests. âI have a bottle a friend gave me last Christmas.â She gets to her feet and goes over to the sideboard where she retrieves the liqueur and two small glasses.
The intense, sweet, citrus concoction slips down Rhiannonâs throat. âYum.â She licks her lips.
Leila chuckles. âIâm glad you like it.â
âVery refreshing.â Rhiannon yawns, suddenly sleepy. âIâll go to bed now if you donât mind. School was tiring today.â Not to mention her walk across the city.
Leila pats her on the arm. âBuonanotte, cara.â Goodnight, dear. âI hope you feel better for sharing your worries with me. As the proverb says, mal comune mezzo gaudio.â A trouble shared is a trouble halved.
âIt has helped, grazie.â Rhiannon pecks Leila on the cheek.
